Screentone

So, what is screentone and what on earth do you do with it?

Basically, screentone is a low-tack adhesive-backed, transparent sheet of black printed dots. Used by manga artists in Japan (where comics are predominately b&w) screentone represents shading. The size of the dots, the pattern and the distance they are apart from each other gives the optical illusion (at a distance) of differing shades of grey. Extemely easy to use, screentone can be repositioned and peeled from artwork without any form of damage. Once you have your shaded artwork just how you want it, simply rub the screentone into place with a blunt end (such as the 'Tone Hera)'.

This clear mat has been designed to protect the surface of your trace equipment. It is ideal for producing comics, like tone work or toher cutting projects. For the purpose of producing comics it has 5mm makers alongthe outerframe instead of ruler lines. The face of he mat is an embossed mat finish so that cutting marks are almost inconspicuous. The mat is thin but it is constructed from a strong material so that it is not likely to be pierced by a cutter. (For maximum long life please keep out of direct sunlight and away from heat).

After you put your screentone on a picture you need to rub (or burnish) it down to get the tone nice and flat and without any air bubbles. The tone hera is a spatula specially for doing just that!

The next step up in 'fanciness' is the GRADUATED PATTERN. The descriptions are for the amount of dots in a linear inch.
