We first came across Anpanman (if you're wondering, his head is a stuffed bun) in the 1980s where he was teaching Japanese kids English via a Linguaphone VHS tape. Little did we realise that his empire and populairty spread far and wide and both he and his massive cast of supporting characters (1768 at the last count - a world record!) are still going strong. We love a bit of Anpanman but, shssssh! Baikinman is actually our fave.
